The words Non-GMO have been popping up all over food labels in recent years, but what does it really mean and why might you care?
First off, GMO stands for genetically modified organism – it’s a plant, animal, microorganism, or other organisms whose genetic makeup has been modified in a lab. You may also hear the term biotechnology, which is the type of technology used to create a GMO.
GMOs are created to achieve a desired trait, such as insect resistance or drought tolerance. The only GMOs commercially available in the U.S. are alfalfa, apples, canola, corn, cotton, papaya, potatoes, soybeans, squash, and sugar beets. Corn – the number one crop in America – has been undergoing genetic modifications in the U.S. since 1995.
It is DaySpring Farm’s belief that animals should feast on all-natural foods. Our cattle are pasture-raised, grass-fed, and grass-finished and our pigs are all non-GMO corn-fed. There are several great health benefits noted in feeding non-GMO corn to our hogs:
- Non-GMO corn is richer in nutrients, it strengthens the immune system and has been found to contain 60% more antioxidants than the GMO counterpart.
- GMO crops can withstand huge amounts of pesticides, which means there will be some residual amounts of certain toxins, like the Bt-toxin, which can cause allergic reactions. Combine this with potential immune system problems and fewer nutrients found in GMO corn.
- We also feel our hogs are better able at keeping their bodies strong and healthy on the exclusive non-GMO corn diet. This provides a prime pork option — you will be happy about serving anyone.
The flavor profile of our non-GMO corn-fed pork offers the most amazing natural taste and texture. All of our meats are free of antibiotics, hormones, MSG, nitrates, preservatives, and are gluten-free.
Our pork is available online with the option of the whole pig or half pig. If you’d like to taste our pork before making a full investment, you can dine locally at Colorado Boy (Montrose) and at the Lobby Grille located inside Montrose Memorial Hospital, where our meats are served.
Our Non-GMO corn-fed pork is $3.50/lb hanging weight + processing + a $100 deposit. Contact us for healthier local meat: (970) 234-6360/DaySpring Farm/Olathe, CO
